Throughout his career, Dr. Sheldon Russell has had nine novels published. The first, EMPIRE, a suspense novel, was published in 1993 by Evans Publications Inc. Two historic frontier novels followed with Pinnacle Books: THE SAVAGE TRAIL, in 1998 and REQUIEM AT DAWN, in 2000. The University of Oklahoma Press published DREAMS TO DUST: A TALE OF THE OKLAHOMA LAND RUSH in 2006 and THE DIG: IN SEARCH OF CORONADO’S TREASURE in 2013.
Recently Russell has written the Hook Runyon mystery series for St Martins Minotaur. The first of these, THE YARD DOG: A MYSTERY was released in 2009, followed by: THE INSANE TRAIN, 2010, DEAD MAN’S TUNNEL, 2012, and THE HANGING OF SAMUEL ASH, 2013. Harlequin has acquired the paperback rights to all four.
Russell’s novels have garnered a number of awards. His work has been praised by The New York Times, and both Booklist and Publishers Weekly have given his work starred reviews. REQUIEM AT DAWN was selected as a Finalist for Best Original Paperback in the 2001 by the Western Writers of America. DREAMS TO DUST: A TALE OF THE OKLAHOMA LAND RUSH was recognized as an Official Oklahoma Centennial Project and went on to win the Langum Prize for Historical Fiction, as well as the Oklahoma Book Award in Fiction for 2006. THE INSANE TRAIN, second in the mystery series, was selected by Publishers Weekly as one of the six best mysteries of 2010. Russell’s latest mystery, THE HANGING OF SAMUEL ASH was chosen as a Finalist for the Oklahoma Book Award competition for 2013.
Works in progress include: THE UNCLEAN, THE WOODCUTTER, COUGAR MOUNTAIN, and SHRINK WRAPPED.
Growing up on a cattle ranch in the Gloss Mountains of Oklahoma has given Russell a keen sense of place and a particular interest in off-beat characters. His was a story-telling culture, one of humor and of hard times. A passion for narrative and for history was inevitable.
He and his wife, a sculptor, currently reside on the home ranch in northwestern Oklahoma where they both work daily at their respective crafts. Russell enjoys reading, gardening, and collecting his favorite books.
